After the accident with Anya, Zenitsu doesn't think he can look at another girl in the mansion the way he normally does. Just like that, everything has changed. He's gone from having two roommates to none in the span of a few weeks. He's alone, just as he's been for most of his life.
How long has it been since he ran into the sapphire room after spying Anya's body? He's certainly cried long enough. His eyes are swollen and his head hurts. Maybe he should just sleep, probably crying some more in the process. Before he can pick himself up to drop onto the chaise, however, a single knock sounds.
He looks toward the door with the sluggish turn of his head. Did he imagine that? No, someone definitely knocked. It can't be Phoenix, who came and left. There's no point in trying to guess. This time around, he knows better than to hope that it's Anya on the other side.
Padding over to the door, he cracks it open an inch to a spot of blue. His lips part in muted surprise as he locks eyes with Toi.
❥ FIRST
There's no such thing as enough. As if losing Anya wasn't bad enough, the mansion sends an armed duck his way. It's absurd, is what it is.
He whimpers the whole way back to his room. Luna and Phoenix may have seen to the wound, but his arm throbs intermittently. He considers sleeping through the pain when his stomach growls in protest. Sighing, he lies on the chaise for a good fifteen minutes before giving in to his hunger.
"Hey."
A voice calls to him as he descends the stairs to the first floor. There, at the bottom of the stairway, is Toi. Zenitsu starts. It's strange, engaging with Toi like this. It was always Anya who was more participatory when they were all together.
Well, it was a long day and they've both lost someone important to them. Zenitsu invites Toi to eat with him, though he expects Toi to refuse. Shockingly, Toi accepts—not only that, he makes enough soba for both of them without prompting.
The soba is delicious. They talk as they eat, and Zenitsu finds that Toi is far more considerate than for which he initially gave credit. While Toi isn't the most communicative, his actions speak plainly for him.
They delve into the matters of family and kappa, which segues into Toi's notorious violent streak. Talk about a terrible temper.
For all the inanity, it's a welcome change from Zenitsu's rapidly mounting anxiety since Wednesday evening. What's more, Toi has taken time out of the night to attend to someone as needy and whiny as him. For a while, Zenitsu really thought that he'd be alone again with Anya's absence.
And just as he thought that, Toi appeared.
When Toi takes their empty bowls back to the sink, putting his face to Zenitsu, Zenitsu looks down at his splinted arm and hand resting on his lap. The pain of losing Anya, as well as of getting shot, is immense. Even so, a strange warmth has settled in his chest.
